Follow these steps

  1. Open a PDF containing top-level bookmarks.
  2. Export a ZIP split at supported bookmark destinations.
  3. Extract and inspect the first and last page of every chapter.

No top-level bookmarks are reported

Open the outline in a reader. Nested entries, remote destinations and an image of a contents page may not supply supported local boundaries. Use explicit Split ranges when necessary.

A chapter begins on the wrong page

Compare its first page with the source bookmark destination. Remove ambiguous duplicate boundaries or create a clean outline before repeating the split.

Check whether this is the right operation

The splitter uses bookmark destinations, not headings printed on the paper. A visible table of contents is not the same as the document outline available in a reader sidebar.

A more useful retry

For the manual example, compare every chapter filename with its first heading. A bookmark can point to a title page before the actual chapter; keep that opening page when it belongs to the section.

A checked example you can try

Alpha and Delta boundaries produce two readable chapter files.

Check the result

Bookmarks without local page destinations cannot define boundaries. Nested bookmarks are not chapter boundaries. Page copying can remove editable forms; flatten them explicitly first.

Keep the original. When this task produces a file, reopen the download in the application where you will use it and inspect the affected pages. An illustration explains the operation; it is not a recorded processing test.

Practical tips

  • Inspect the top-level outline and its destinations before splitting. After inserting or removing a page, check chapter boundaries again instead of relying on old printed page numbers.
  • Open the outline in a reader. Nested entries, remote destinations and an image of a contents page may not supply supported local boundaries. Use explicit Split ranges when necessary.
  • Compare its first page with the source bookmark destination. Remove ambiguous duplicate boundaries or create a clean outline before repeating the split.
