Change the original text in a PDF

Choose a text object on the page, enter your replacement and preview the actual changed PDF.

How it works

  1. Open a PDF. Select an existing text object on the page.
  2. Enter a short replacement and preview the changed PDF. Use characters supported by the available font and keep the replacement within its bounds.
  3. Keep the edited document in the workspace or export it. Reopen the output and inspect each changed line.

Single-line replacements can shrink to fit the original bounds, down to half the original size. Keep edits in the shared workspace to continue with other tools. Embedded fonts need characters already available on the page. Scanned pages and paragraph reflow are not supported.

When to use this tool

Correct a short label, date or typo in a PDF containing real text objects. Use Add text for a new note; it does not replace underlying text.

What to check before sharing

Scanned text is an image and cannot be edited with this tool. Paragraph reflow is unsupported. Embedded fonts may lack new characters; fitting can shrink text to half its original size. A visible replacement is not a redaction guarantee.

Supported files

Browser text editing. Single-line edits can shrink to fit the original area (minimum half size). Embedded fonts need available characters; scans and nested graphics have limitations. No paragraph reflow. Editing invalidates digital signatures.

Inputs: PDF. Performance depends on your device. Download important work before closing the browser; local storage is not a backup.

Troubleshooting

If the file will not open, check it in another PDF reader. If it is password-protected, use Remove a PDF password with a password you know. For scans that need selectable text, run Make a PDF searchable first.

Common questions

Why can I not select a sentence?

It may be a scan, outlined artwork or unsupported text structure. OCR adds searchable text but does not reconstruct a fully editable layout.

Does this edit the original text?

Supported single-line PDF text objects are changed in the exported PDF. This is different from adding a text overlay.

Which files can I use?

Supported inputs: PDF. Browser text editing. Single-line edits can shrink to fit the original area (minimum half size). Embedded fonts need available characters; scans and nested graphics have limitations. No paragraph reflow. Editing invalidates digital signatures.

Is this free?

Core tools require no account or subscription and add no watermark.

Do my documents leave my device?

Document processing runs in your browser. PDF Studio does not upload document files. Explicitly saved drafts and My files remain in this browser until deleted. Read aloud may use network-backed browser voices.
